As early as birth, we are being shown what a family is - a mother, a father, sometimes siblings who shower you with love and take care of you until you are ready to take care of yourself. By the start of school, we start defining what a family is - a group of individuals who are related -- the smallest unit that makes up a community. We start listing down types of families - nuclear, extended and so on.
By high school, our own list of family members increases because then we get to know different people, and we realize that the world is so small because everyone seems to be a relativein one way or another -- and yet, no matter how big the family that we now know is, we think that everything is just as simple until we grow old enough to realize that a family is not the simplest unit in the community, that the relationships between the people inside the family is not simple. at all.
we begin to understand that relationships inside the family are complex; we love each other so much that we begin to hate; we protect each other from being hurt and in turn hurt our own. Through the years, the family which used to be big, start to grow small. smaller.
It's sad; disheartening. Especially when the reason for separation are material things.. When problems which could be talked about are not resolved due to one's pride. when anger gets in the way that forms hatred.
You begin to question if your ignorance as a child has faked the happiness, the sincerity that was once present in each and every member of your big family.. You wonder when did all the change began? when did people started acting not as family members but as business partners, not even as friends.
Again, it's a sad situation with a very small ray of hope that everything will be back to how it used to be - happy and full of love or so you thought.
I grew up in a family who knows more than the extended.. And as i grew up, the number grows less and less. Some die, some gets separated. And some choose to go. They say that no matter what happens, you'd have your family to back you up. I always perceived my big family as such -- never did i imagine that one day i'd wake up in a situation where the people in that big family, instead of looking after each others' backs are biting at it. Never did i consider that this is such a harsh world to make people change too much that once a happy and big family would lose sight of the reason on why we should all stick together -- love.
im grateful that my nuclear family is holding on and growing strong. But it's not too easy to let go of something you grew up with.. i still pray that id be able to see the purpose on why this is happening. I do know though, that as always, everything that is happening, is for the better.
